Some Apache OpenOffice users are reporting that version 4.1.8 is crashing on Apple macOS 11.0 (aka “Big Sur” or 10.16) when opening OOXML documents – like .docx and .xlsx. The error message is:
- I’ve been using LibreOffice extensively on Big Sur since the first dev beta. I mostly use calc, but occasionally word processor. One of the betas had a glitch that caused a crash when I tried to print, but it was resolved on the next Big Sur beta, and I’ve had no problems since.
- I upgraded my MacBook Pro to macOS Big Sur 11.0.1 and then LibreOffice from 6.4.7.2 to 7.0.3. The characters were blurry on 6.4.7.2 and on 7.0.3 as well. Because of other bugs on 7.0.3 I reverted to 6.4.7. I have done some tests with OpenOffice 4.1.8, NeoOffice 2017.23 and, unfortunately with LO6472, but I believe it gave interesting results.
- I just installed LibreOffice 7.1.2.2 on my Macbook Pro running Big Sur 11.3 and some important features are not working. The format paintbrush does nothing and when I go to print it fails with a 'printer error' dialogue box. When I do 'About LibreOffice', it thinks it's running in MAC OS X 10.16 environment.
OpenOffice quit unexpectedly
Free, powerful and open source office suite – the successor to OpenOffice. Compatible with Microsoft Office. Please note that we can't give technical support here – for.

One solution is to install LibreOffice, a more actively developed successor project. (OpenOffice’s last major release – 4.1 – was back in 2014.)
LibreOffice has much better support for modern operating systems, and many other features too, such as OOXML export, an updated NotebookBar user interface, a cloud-based version and much more. This timeline shows the major releases:
LibreOffice 7.1 runs on macOS Big Sur, so download it here and carry on with your work. And there’s more to come: an optimised version of LibreOffice for Apple’s M1-based Macs is being developed, thanks to work from Collabora Productivity, a company in LibreOffice’s ecosystem. And more improvements for LibreOffice on macOS Big Sur are on the way – stay tuned!

This article describes known issues for running NeoOffice on macOS 10.12 Sierra, 10.13 High Sierra, 10.14 Mojave, 10.15 Catalina, and 11.0 Big Sur. Follow us on Twitter @NeoOffice to get notified when we fix any Sierra, High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina, or Big Sur issues.
[edit]Problems after upgrading to Sierra, High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina, or Big Sur?
[edit]Step 1 - Download and install the latest version of NeoOffice
Only NeoOffice 2017 or higher will run on High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina, and Big Sur. To upgrade to the latest version of NeoOffice, use the following steps:
- NeoOffice Mac App Store:
- Ensure that Apple's App Store application has installed NeoOffice 2017.27 by launching Apple's App Store application and doing these steps
- macOS Sierra and High Sierra users: Install this patch to open PDF files and install extensions that worked in previous versions of NeoOffice 2017.
- Install the latest test patch for NeoOffice 2017.27
- If NeoOffice does not launch or NeoOffice Viewer launches, we recommend that you try these steps.
- NeoOffice Professional Edition:
- Install NeoOffice 2017.27 Professional Edition if you are running an older version of NeoOffice
- Install the latest test patch for NeoOffice 2017.27 Professional Edition
- Optional: Some database features and wizards in NeoOffice require Java. If NeoOffice displays a dialog that says Java is required, install Java SE Development Kit (JDK) from Oracle. Note: only Oracle's JDK will work. Neither Apple's Java nor Oracle's Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) will work.
- If the NeoOffice download or installation fails, we recommend that you try these steps.
[edit]Step 2 - If NeoOffice cannot save, try these steps
Libreoffice Mac Big Sur
If you see the dialog shown in the screen snapshot to the right when you edit or try to save a document, then the problem is that you have launched NeoOffice Viewer. NeoOffice Viewer can only view files and cannot save documents. To fix this problem, right-click or Control-click on the NeoOffice icon in the Dock while NeoOffice Viewer is still running. In the popup menu that appears, select the Options > Show in Finder menu item. A Finder window will appear. Quit NeoOffice, drag the NeoOffice application in that Finder window to the Trash, and empty the Trash.
If you have not already installed NeoOffice Professional Edition or Classic Edition or NeoOffice from the Mac App Store, install either now using the steps in Step 1 above.
[edit]Step 3 - If NeoOffice tells you to install a newer version, try these steps
If your web browser displays a page telling you to install a newer version of NeoOffice whenever you launch NeoOffice, then you have an old version of NeoOffice Professional Edition or Classic Edition installed on your machine. To fix this problem, right-click or Control-click on the NeoOffice icon in the Dock while NeoOffice is still running.
[edit]Step 4 - If the Mac App Store tells you that NeoOffice is already installed, try these steps
If Apple's App Store application displays a dialog that says that NeoOffice is already installed, then you have an old version of NeoOffice Professional Edition or Classic Edition installed on your machine. To fix this problem, open a Finder window and go to the /Applications folder. Drag the NeoOffice application in that Finder window to the Trash, and empty the Trash. Then, go back to Apple's App Store application and click on the download icon to install NeoOffice.
